What an excellent memoir this is. Mary's childhood, marred by her troubled relationship with her stepmother, is presented without self-pity, which makes the story all the more touching, all the more powerful. One can only hope that the author will consider oenning a second memoir, spanning the time between school's end and the move to Scotland. In the meantime, kudos to Mary J. MacLeod. I seldom give 5 star reviews. I read all 3 of Ms MacLeod's books and only wish there were more. Her books are to be savored. This book in particular was very emotional and raw. It also gives some insight into how some children were raised in the early 20th century. I am only a few years younger than the author. I wish she would write a book about the intervening years between this book and the other two. If you're looking for something meaningful and entertaining, her books are for you.
